I am an aspiring OCR athlete, having first discovered the sport in 2015. At that time, I had lost over 60 lbs and was starting to get into shape. I heard about Spartan Race from a friend and signed up for my first race with no training and no idea what to expect. The race pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of. Crossing that finish line was an amazing feeling and one I would remember forever. After that race, my teammates and I decided to go for the Spartan Trifecta, but I could never seem to get them to commit.
Since that race, I ran a race each year, but never seemed satisfied with myself for not committing to - and completing - the Trifecta. In 2017, as I approached my 40th birthday I decided that I would make a commitment to complete it in 2018. I purchased my pass and posted it on social media to keep myself accountable. I set out in early 2018 to get in better shape, improving my running endurance and physical strength in order to complete my Trifecta. The feeling of crossing that finish line in Spartanburg at the completion of my Trifecta was nothing short of elation.
I look back on that year and grin with pride when I see that when obstacles appeared in life (injuries, illness, complete laziness) and on the course I was able to adapt and overcome. I got stronger both physically and mentally as the year went on. I am excited to see what 2019 has in store for me as I venture back out onto the race course, trying out new race series and locations.
