Q & A

My first race was the Abominable Snow Race outside of Chicago in 2016. I had recently watched Robert Killian and Cody Moat on NBC on Christmas Day battling in the 2015 Spartan World Championship and decided that obstacle racing looked to combine my love of fitness and my love of the outdoors. My dad and I got on the internet and found the next obstacle race in our area, and the Abominable Snow Race was it.

It’s fun. I like to see what I am capable of, and I enjoy the pain.

Anywhere up a mountain. Could we do a race up Pike’s Peak? I really enjoy mountain races like Killington & Tahoe. Generally, the tougher the venue is, the more I like it.

I plan to change to my middle name to “Danger." My parents were going to name me John Danger Penland, but chickened out at the last minute and named me for my uncle, Christopher. Sorry Uncle Chris 🙂

Robert Killian because of his grit. At the World's Toughest Mudder last year, he had already run 100 miles and had locked-up 2nd place. He did not need to run another lap, but it wasn’t a question for him. He went back out and ran another 5 mile lap after 22+ hours on the course because he could. That exemplifies grit and toughness.

Running, soccer, and weight-lifting. I was primarily a soccer player growing up, but in the summer before high school I really got into fitness - both running and weightlifting. That made my transition to OCR two years later much easier.

  • Big Bear... While I did well, I am not particularly satisfied with my performance. I imagine a lot of other racers feel the same way. The difficulty of this course quickly reveals the racers who are not 100% on their game. I am not exactly sure what happened, but things didn’t come together. There are a couple different factors for me to consider over the coming weeks. It is time to recover, re-group, and re-commit. Congrats to all the racers who both battled this course successfully and to the racers who were ready to fully leave themselves on the mountain.
I’ve decided not to race the Sprint today. My best move is to not to delay my recovery so I can get back to work. Highlight of the day - Sharing my medal and doing a quick pre-race work-out with a very young racer who was disappointed that it was not yet time for her kids race. I hope she crushed it. @spartanrace @spartan

  • The mountains are calling. I’ve been looking forward to testing myself at the Spartan Big Bear Beast for a year. 12 miles and over 5,000 ft of elevation gain starting at 6,000 feet.
Raise your hand if you like to suffer ✋. @spartanrace @spartan

  • I had a fun weekend in Seattle with my father and grandfather. My race results were solid - 16th in the U.S. National Series 8 mile race and 5th in the 3 mile race today. I ran clean not failing any obstacles either day in very challenging conditions. Today was a slick, muddy course but it was a lot of fun. My next race is the Montana Beast in Kalispell in 3 weeks. I am excited to start racing longer courses and mountains. @spartanrace @spartan
