Pro Tip: The Mental Side of Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) - Mantras/Self-Talk

Pro Tip: The Mental Side of Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) – Mantras/Self-Talk

There is so much attention paid to the physical side of training and racing, but what about the mental side of the sport? Mental stamina, grit, and focus can be a game-changer when it comes to making the most out of your physical abilities and performing to your potential.

One strategy I have found extremely helpful when it comes to maximizing my mind game and mentally preparing for hard training and competition is the use of a personal mantra. A mantra is a word or phrase of a certain significance to the person who repeats and buys-into it. Common examples are Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan, or the simple phrase “you got this.” It doesn’t matter what the mantra is. What does matter is that it is something that is meaningful to you as a person and an athlete…it’s something that will draw you back to your why and push you to keep fighting when things get hard.

“Conviction and comfort don’t live on the same block” is a quote I heard a while back and was drawn to immediately. The “catchiness” makes it easy to remember and repeat, and the metaphor emphasizes the idea that nothing worth having comes easy. I repeat this to myself when doubt and the temptation to quit creeps in, and it has proven to be a switch to access my super power! Whether it’s because I’m pushing past the point of comfort or because something didn’t go my way and I need to bounce back, this phrase centers my mind on the one thing I can control: my own effort.

I highly recommend you find or create a mantra that inspires you. It should be brief and to the point, but also speak to you, motivate you, and help you dig deeper. I’d be willing to bet that a meaningful mantra will help you sharpen your mental game and that your physical performance will reap the benefits!
